Katabasing considers how new technologies inevitably give rise to new occult narratives and beliefs, and the aesthetic sensations which drive these beliefs online.
Made for Gossamer Fog’s Alt_R virtual production studio, and continuing in their Ringlorn season of events, the work uses Alt_R to tell the story a documentary production’s investigation into a viral trend emanating from the weird seam of the internet, using the 7x3m screen, motion tracking, Unreal Engine 5, live performance and sound design to tell the story through live physical interactions with virtual space.
As the performance unwinds, the work draws on theories of play, re-enactment and LARPing, as well as real esoteric online subcultures, ritual magic, internet folklore and Netflix true crime shows, to explore the affects and techniques these different viral content and cultures deploy to inform and infect our sense of reality online and offline. The work speculates on the repercussions of these references when stretched to weird extremes, and sets this manipulation of our feeling-for-the-real against the powers of the legendary Greek poet Orpheus, who was said to be able to move animals and the natural world using the power of his words and song, eventually using these powers to gain access and travel into the underworld, an act known in the ancient work as Katabasis.

Exploring masculinity, facade and hustle culture the game follows a deteriorating medieval knight game. Delving into and deconstructing the process of game design engines like Epic Games 'Unreal Engine', 'The Castle' explores how production informs the final product and how software can inform the creation of in-game interaction and retrospection between asset heavy production. Exposing the facade of the final product with the sensitive touch of the creator and director in this case Freddie Sanders. How can these softwares represent fragility and how can we represent sensitivity and touch with synthetic normally 'perfect' design softwares that are meant for commercial production.

God plane explores the tender relationship between art maker and world building. Made for greylabelrecordings production summit series and continuing the release roll out of sonic assets God-Plane tells the story of search of audio spirituality and the search for awakening. From hardware used in the production of sound to the earth itself the 3D animation is a bi-product of the waste of production in sound and music. The piece heavily composited reflect the gaze of a camera rather than the eyes itself continuing this cycle of hardware copying synthetic processes.

White-larve explores the workings of an asset based studio practice representative of post-modern computer based art practices and its relationship with classical critique present in art-institutions and traditional studio practices. How do these work spaces define the production or product?
As the 3D animation loops several sonic assets are played randomly harmonising contradicting and rubbing against each other to compose a new composition. This idea of giving life to sounds that have never been publicly shown questions whether if something that isn't seen is valid, the piece itself gives validation to these individual stems and assets composing them into a new form.
The stage is various random stock studio images all taken from google the product then being documented a final validation setting the stage, the upload itself this archive. What does it mean for this to be archived when completely synthetically made on the computer how can these things obtain space and thereby validation, the question still unanswered at the end of the loop.

'Eclosions of my studio practice' shown at The Slade School of Fine Art BA/BFA Degree Show.
Eclosion: borrowed from French éclosion, from éclos-, variant stem of éclore "to hatch (from an egg), emerge (from a cocoon)" (going back to Old French esclore, going back to Vulgar Latin *exclaudere, re-formation of Latin exclūdere "to bring out from its container, hatch from an egg"). To the progression of becoming and transcending the experience of becoming publicly is directly referential to gender but on a public level referential to the degree show itself and publicly unveiling work and thoughts produced over 4 years at the Slade School of Fine Art. Technology encroaches on the butterflies and the paintings themselves some outlines of lights make their way to be immortalised on can canvas outlasting the temporary sonic structures that stand in the space.

Rakyat Gaga Rakyat ("the people help the people") 2022 At Whitechapel Gallery
By Areena Ang
‘Rakyat Jaga Rakyat’ (“the people help the people”) is an experimental split-screen video that emulates the ultimate precious object: a family photo book. Moving from the personal to the wider community, the film illustrates the fast-moving conditions of flash floods and climate change phenomena in Malaysia. It seeks to highlight moments of resilience and collectively of a country that has not only been abandoned by its government, but by the stakeholders of ecological imperialism. Sourcing the artist’s own intimate family photos, ‘netizen’ self-uploaded Youtube vlogs and lo-fi news videos – it ruminates on what is at stake of being lost.
